For tradesmen, your tools are how you make money and replacing them can eat into your profits, while some may opt for leaving their tools in their vans, others will pick a safer option like self storage.
In today’s article we will take a look at why self storage is useful for storing your tools and how to protect them the best when they are in storage, one of the biggest problems is rust.
You invest in brand new stainless steel or metal equipment, put them away carefully, and later find those unwelcome brown patches creeping across the surface.
Rust happens when oxygen and moisture get cosy with metal, but with the right cleaning habits, protective measures and proper storage, you can keep corrosion at bay.
Rust prevention does not have to be complicated. It mostly comes down to having the right environment and following simple care steps.
One of the biggest problems with keeping your tools safe is that you are busy and most tools go straight from job to storage without getting cleaned. When this happens, tiny bits of sawdust, grime and even fingerprints trap moisture and hold it against the metal. This can cause them to become rusted and damaged long term so before packing anything away, wipe tools completely clean and let them dry fully, especially if you are storing your tools long-term.
Even a small amount of leftover water sealed inside a storage box can cause your tools to rust. If you spot early rust, use fine steel wool or a mild rust remover right away before the problem spreads.
A light protective layer goes a long way in preventing rust from forming.
Mineral oil, light machine oil and purpose made rust inhibiting oil are all popular choices to keep moisture off the surface.
You only need a thin amount so that the tool feels slightly tacky. For tools you rarely touch, a coat of paste wax creates a smooth barrier and keeps dust away. Some people also place anti rust vapour products inside tool cupboards or containers. These release a vapour that forms a microscopic shield over the metal and helps stop rust from forming.
Moisture is rust’s favourite ingredient. Keeping humidity under control where your tools live will make a huge difference. In sheds, garages and workshops, even a small dehumidifier can maintain safer moisture levels.
In smaller drawers or toolboxes, silica gel packets or other moisture absorbing products will help. Remember to replace them regularly so they stay effective.
Avoid keeping tools directly on cold concrete floors. Water vapour rises from concrete and will settle on metal. Condensation is another issue. If your storage space is cold at night and warm during the day, metal surfaces sweat and rust forms faster. Try storing tools in a temperature stable location or even raising a toolbox slightly off the floor to improve airflow.
Your storage solution is just as important as cleaning and coating. Closed cabinets or sealed toolboxes help block damp air. Make sure rubber seals remain in good condition so moisture does not slip in.
Avoid letting tools touch each other. Metal-on-metal contact traps pockets of humidity. Drawer liners, cloth dividers and smart organisation prevent scratches and reduce corrosion risks.
Even if you are cautious your tools will naturally rust over time so check them after every use, especially when its wet or frosty or if you are storing your tools in a unit that is not climate-controlled.
If rust appears, deal with it immediately before it spreads. Also inspect the space itself to make sure there are no damp patches or signs of condensation, and improve ventilation if needed.
If you are storing tools for a long stretch, give them some extra attention. Clean thoroughly, dry them completely and apply a thin protective coat.
Add moisture control products to the storage container. Some tradesmen even place a gentle low watt heater inside a large tool chest to prevent cold metal from sweating, however this could be a fire hazard and isn’t recommended.
If you are renting a self storage unit for your tools and you want to avoid rust then look for one that is dry and climate controlled to protect your gear.
