Self storage containers come in a variety of sizes. When looking to hire a self storage unit it can be difficult to know what size storage unit you need.
To make selecting a storage unit easier for you, in this blog post we will be looking at the different size storage units that are available and what you could potentially store inside them. By the end of the article, you should know exactly what size storage unit you need, so whether you need to store unwanted furniture or store furniture temporarily while relocating this will help.
Storage units can come in many sizes, but typically you should expect storage units in the following sizes:
You may also find storage unit sizes in between the above, so if you do adjust what you can store in them accordingly.
A 25 SQ FT storage container is roughly the same size as a small shed. These wouldn’t be suitable for large pieces of furniture, but they are perfect for storing boxes, books and smaller household items that you don’t need access to that often.
In a 35 SQ FT storage container you can store larger furniture items such as tables and chairs. Typically students and homeowners that need a little extra room go for storage units this size.
If you are moving home and need a little extra storage during the move then a 50 SQ FT storage unit is a great place to start. These containers are the same size as an average garage unit and can store many of your home’s larger items such as beds, tables and chairs. If you are moving home then we wouldn’t recommend getting a storage unit smaller than this 50 SQ FT.
A 75 SQ FT storage unit can hold the contents of a 2 bedroom flat. It’s large enough to hold larger items so if you are relocating and have at least 2 bedrooms this should be where you would look to start with your storage. A 75 SQ FT container is also perfect for businesses looking to store equipment and inventory.
A 100 SQ FT storage container is the size of the average garage. This is the perfect sized storage container for a 2 bedroom house or a place to keep office inventory. A 100 SQ FT storage container is large enough to keep your garden furniture within when not in use too.
You can store the contents of a large 3 bedroom house in a 150 SQ FT storage container. Larger items such as workout equipment can be stored within a 150SQ FT storage unit too. Once again a 150 SQ FT storage unit can be a great choice for businesses to use to store their inventory.
A 200 SQ FT storage container can store the contents of a large 4-5 bedroom house. It’s also large enough to be used for business storage for larger companies and it’s a great alternative to hiring a warehouse as it’s far more cost-effective.
Getting the right sized storage unit for your situation is important because a storage unit that is too small is going to fill up too quickly and getting a storage unit that is too big is going to cost you more.
Our advice would be to get a storage unit slightly larger than your needs, you will end up paying slightly more than if you got a smaller unit, but what we often find is that our customers get units based on what they think they need to store, to only find they have far more items than they originally thought.
We also see people with smaller storage units trying to cram their items into small spaces and often this leads to them damaging their valuables. Storage unit pricing is very affordable and breaking your items to save a few pounds isn’t worth it.
If you are using a storage unit for business then you may want to take the opposite approach and start with the smallest sized units that you need and then upgrade your unit size as your business grows. If you were to get a large unit straight off it could mean that you end up wasting money initially as you could be using that extra money to invest back into your business.
