First, you are going to need to create a shelf template, this can be done by using painter’s tape to match the exact length of your self. Measure out the length of your shelf on the wall and then mark where the bracket holes should go on your tape.
If you are bringing your shelves from a previous home, check the wall type is the same, otherwise you will need different fixtures or fittings.
Next, you’re going to want to put the mark tape onto the wall where you want to hang a shelf. Use a level to make sure it’s straight. Once you have put the tape on the walls you want to stand back and check to see that it is straight. You can use a spirit level to make sure that the tape is straight but sometimes a visual guide is more than enough.
If you’re hanging more than one shelf it’s important to not only remember to level a tape but also the hallmarks on multiple shelves. This makes sure that the brackets line up on the shelf above and below it.
At this point it’s good to take a step back to see if you’re happy with the location of your shelving, if you are not happy that’s okay you can take the tape off the wall and reposition it until you’re happy with the positioning once you are finally happy you can then to begin to make holes in your wall.
Now that you have your mark tape you will need to get your drill and drill through the tape at the marked positions. If you’re not drilling into a stud you will need to use wall plugs. Before drilling you will need to use a studfinder otherwise you could electrocute yourself.
The next step is to attack brackets, you will need to secure your (into place using the appropriate screws full stop at this point it’s good to double-check with a level before fully tightening your screws.
