How to create storage space in your Uni Dorm

April 5, 2023 |

When moving to uni, chances are you won’t have much space in your dorms or your rented accommodation and while we always advise students to hire student storage during their time at university there are things that can be done to save space in your room.

Keeping your uni room clutter free will help you get the most out of university as clutter can become a massive distraction. However, uni rooms are small and can become cluttered easily so if you don’t want to hire a storage unit just yet here are some tips to get the most out of your uni room.

Storage hacks in your cupboard or wardrobes

Clutter is the result of lack of space so to get around that you will need to make some. However, we can’t just magically create more space in our rooms so we need to be smart with the space that we do have and see if there is any way of adding additional storage.

One of the best ways to add storage to an existing space is to use hooks, hangers and pegs. These inexpensive items are a quick and affordable way of hanging your items up without needing to create space.

The backs of cupboard doors and closet doors are the best places to fit hooks and pegs and you can choose to put hanging baskets on the back of them. You can then fill these baskets with any items which would have caused clutter in the past.

You can also just hang your clothes on them if you don’t have any baskets.

Under bed storage

You can buy cheap plastic storage containers and fill them with the items that you use the least. If you have a bed that has inbuilt storage even better.

Our tip when it comes to under-bed storage is to keep this space for your least-used items as it can be a pain to get your items out of storage when you need to use them the most.

Items such as thick blankets should be stored under the bed in the Summer and then thinner blankets and sheets should be stored under the bed in the Winter.

Storage tidies

Storage containers or any sort of desk tidying storage is going to help your room at university be less cluttered. You can put your pens, pencils, spare change and even mobile phone.

You don’t have to use a desk tidy though, whiteboards and notice boards can be used to keep you and your room organised.

Only take your essentials

Moving to university is a big deal for all involved so naturally, students and their parents will pack too much. If you have taken too many items to university then take some of them back home when you go home for the holidays.

It’s only normal to overpack when you first go to university and many of us have done it so look through your items and decide which of them you need and which of them you don’t then take them home or get rid of them if you don’t need them.

If you do decide to get rid of them, there are many second hand furniture shops in London to which you could try and sell them, or you could try and donate them to London Charities.

If you don’t want to donate your items away and you don’t want to take them home with you either then consider hiring a storage unit. At Urban Locker we have some great deals on student storage and have storage Locations in London suitable for students.
