Can you leave things you don’t want in a storage unit

At first it might seem simple. You finish using a unit, move out what you need, and leave the rest behind. But storage companies do not see it that way. Even if you no longer want the items inside, they remain your responsibility until you deal with them properly.

If you leave items behind, you still pay

Most storage agreements require the unit to be emptied and left clean. If you leave boxes, furniture, or anything else inside, you can be charged extra fees. The facility may arrange for removal themselves, and the cost is passed on to you. In many cases it is more expensive than clearing the items out yourself.

Even if you only leave a few things, you can still be billed for an additional month of rent until the unit is fully cleared. Walking away is rarely the cheaper option.

What happens if you stop paying

If you simply stop paying and walk away, the storage company does not immediately forget about you. They will continue to charge rent and contact you. After a set period, often between one and three months, they may legally declare the unit abandoned.

At that point the facility has the right to sell the contents. Some items might go to auction, some may be sold privately, and things of little or no value could be thrown away. If the money raised does not cover your outstanding balance, you could still be held responsible for the difference.

Why abandoning items can create bigger problems

Abandoning items in storage rarely makes them disappear quietly. It often results in extra charges for removal, outstanding debt if your rent goes unpaid, and in some cases involvement of debt collectors. That can make what seemed like a simple decision far more stressful and costly than expected.  SO even if your a digital nomad and have left the country, you don’t want any nasty surprises when you come back.

There is also no guarantee that the facility will treat your unwanted belongings with care. Once the unit is officially abandoned, they can dispose of items as they see fit.

A better approach than walking away

If you no longer want the items in your storage unit, the simplest step is to speak to the facility. Many will allow you to schedule a clear-out, arrange for a removal service, or even donate suitable items to charity. While this might involve a small cost, it is almost always cheaper and easier than leaving items behind and facing additional fees later.  So even if its something as simple as seasonal decorations or old photos, be sure to get rid of them before vacating your unit.

Some people even arrange junk removal companies to meet them at the unit and clear everything in one visit. It saves time and ensures the contract ends cleanly without any surprises.
